Motorcycle Helmet Requirements

The weather is starting to cool down in Arizona which means it’s the perfect time to ride for motorcyclists. However, safety is still important to remember on the roads. A lot of people ask, is a helmet required when you ride in Arizona? What about when you are under the age of 18?

In Arizona, if you are 18 and over, you are not required to wear a helmet. However, if your motorcycle does not have a protective windshield then protective glasses, goggles or a face shield are required for both the operator and the passenger. If you are under the age of 18, A.R.S. 28-964 states that you must wear a helmet while on the motorcycle.

For additional safety, A.R.S. 28-964 states your motorcycle must have a rearview mirror, footrests and a seat. Footrests and a seat are also required for the passenger.

We recommend that you always wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle for your safety. Please be safe! If involved in an accident, and not wearing a helmet, that may reduce your damages in a lawsuit. Arizona is a pure comparative negligence state. This means that the rider who was not wearing a helmet can collect damages, but the damages awarded will be reduced by the percentage that not wearing a helmet contributed to his or her injuries.
