Toyota Orders Worldwide Recall of 6.5 million Vehicles

On Wednesday, October 21, Toyota Motor Corp said it would recall 6.5 million vehicles worldwide to fix a defective power window switch in some of the company’s most popular vehicles, including the Yaris, Corolla, Camry and others. About 2.7 million of the recalled vehicles are in North America.

The company said the window switch “may have been manufactured with insufficient lubricant grease,” which could short-circuit, overheat and melt, causing a fire.

The new recall, which affects different vehicles, has caused at least 11 incidents in which the switch or car door burned, spokesman Scott Vazin said in an email. One case in the U.S. caused a burn on someone’s hand.

The company will fix vehicles for free through the recall. U.S. vehicles affected by the recall include:

  • 2007 Camry
  • 2009 Camry
